From Dr. Hudson - 9/17/06: In email to WVCPA Sept. 17, 2006 regarding the Good Samaritan Program:

"Hello,

I recently received word that someone had cleaned off all of the Estep graves in the cemetery. Mr. Joe Lowe that the tombstone he and his son Randy ordered for my great-grandfather's grave and that stone was installed on the site on Aug 24, 2006. Mr. Lowe and his son cleaned off that grave and several of the Lowe and Mulligan graves in May, 2006. Richard Kirk is in the process of cleaning up the Kirk burial plot and replacing the fence around it. Jim Shaffer donated a handrail to be installed on the path that leads from the bottom of the hill up to the Nickoson burial plot and he and Richard Kirk plan to install it sometime in the near future. Jim and his relatives continue to keep the Nickoson burial plot cleaned up and decorated. Esther Smith and family have also done some cleaning of the graves of their ancestors. Last night I received word that Mr. Paul Harvey plans to clean off the graves of his ancestors as soon as there us no risk of an encounter with a poisonous snake. Thus, it is evident that the cleanup of Lady Dunn Cemetery is slowly gathering steam. Yet, the overall condition of the cemetery is still quite poor. In order to put more emphasis on cemetery cleanup we are creating a new program to be called Lady Dunn Cemetery Association's Good Samaritans. The first of the attached documents describes that program and the other is a list of the individuals who have made the list of Good Samaritans. Please become a member of LDCA's Good Samaritan Team as soon as possible. Remember that by doing so you will be saving something that is priceless, which is the only visible evidence of much of your family heritage."

[In email later that same day]:

"I thought everyone would like to know that we have received a $100 donation to LDCA's Cemetery Cleanup/Preservation Fund. I am hereby pledging to give $100 to the fund by May 1, 2007. This money will be used to hire an independent contractor to cleanup graves which nobody is tending or adopting.

If you cannot cleanup the graves of your ancestors or if you have the resources please consider giving a donation to this fund so we can begin seeing some significant cleanup results at the cemetery and so our members will see that there is hope that we can save this cemetery. Pledges should be sent to LDCA, P.O. Box 318, Cannelton, WV, 25036 or to thfrbp@suddenlink.net.

Bert Hudson, President of LDCA

From Dr. Hudson 9/8/06: In email to WVCPA Sept. 8, 2006 regarding funding Dunn Cemetery cleanup and maintenance:

"Hello,
Last week, the Washington Mutual Bank, the institution in which LDCA's funds have been deposited, sent me a report showing that LDCA now has $759 in its account. Each month the bank will send me a report showing our balance along with a record of any deposits or withdrawals for the month. The latest report shows that every cent of our money has been deposited in LDCA's bank account. I want everyone to be confident that all of the money contributed to LDCA is being accounted for, so if anyone wants a copy of that report I will mail one to you upon receiving your request.

We are going to start some new programs designed to get the cleanup of Lady Dunn Cemetery underway and keep it going every year hereafter. First, I am asking our members who are physically able to do so to adopt a grave in addition to than those of your ancestors and relatives and to pledge to do the work needed to cleanup that grave and maintain it in good condition. I also want to ask churches, civic groups, community groups, and scout troops to adopt a grave and do the work needed to clean it up...or to contribute money so we can hire someone to clean up and maintain that grave. I am also starting a fund to finance an on-going program of cemetery cleanup and maintenance. These funds will, like our other funds, be deposited in the Washington Mutual Bank in Austin, Texas and every penny will be accounted for in the bank's monthly reports to me and in Annual Reports to our Board of Directors and membership.        In order to start this fund, I hereby pledge to contribute $100 to LDCA's Cemetery Cleanup and Maintenance Fund. Please join me in this program by pledging to clean up and maintain the graves of your ancestors who are buried in Lady Dunn Cemetery or by making a pledge to contribute money so LDCA can hire laborers to do that work. Any funds remaining after we have paid for next year's spring cleanup project will go towards perpetual care of the cemetery in the future. Those who are able should consider willing some money to this fund in order to insure that Lady Dunn Cemetery never again falls into a state of ruin."
