Comments: | Dates in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual by WVCPA or contributing family researchers. Many of these burials
were also recorded by Helen S. Stinson in 1981. This cemetery has been submitted, by Bert W. Hudson, Ph.D., to the WV Culture Center - Historical Preservation Department for consideration as a historic cemetery as defined by the US Secretary of the Interior. A copy of the document Dr. Hudson has written concerning the historical importance of this cemetery may be seen by clicking here. The Dunn cemetery, originally called the "Old Cannelton Burial Ground", has served as the primary burial place for the Cannelton, WV area for over 150 years. WVCPA encourages Dr. Hudson and the ancestors of those buried here at this cemetery in their pursuit of "WV Historic Cemetery" status for Dunn Memorial Park. If you have photos that we may add to this page, of tombstones or portraits of those buried here, or if you have any additions or corrections to the roster of burials listed above, please contact WVCPA at . |
Recollections of visits to this cemetery: |
"My
name is Francine Keesee and my great grandparents are buried at Dunn [The
Woodrum's]. It has been years since I climbed to the top of the mountain but the Morris family, who were the first settlers in the upper Kanawha Valley, are buried there. I remember seeing Celia Morris's gravestone and also a Sydney Elizabeth Prior (Dr.'s wife) that stuck in my head because my first name is also Sydney and I thought it was an odd name for that time. There were a lot of unmarked caved in graves so you had to be careful. I also kicked up grouse or quail which gave me quite a fright when they came out of those graves! Harvey's grave was also caved in and my husband thought maybe they did not make as good of caskets during the depression. Anyway we filled his in but in the last 20 years the headstones have taken a beating. Last time I was there, the lay of the land had completely changed so we had a hard time relocating the graves. I had no idea slaves might be buried there although I have pictures of my grandfather with a lot of black miners. My husband is talking with his black salesmen to try and get them to pick the brains of their fathers, who worked the mines in that area, and I will let you know if he finds out any info."
