John
Harvey and his wife Celey Harvey (maiden name Morris) were the parents
of Morris Harvey, founder of Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV. In
1979, Morris Harvey College became the University of Charleston, WV.
John Harvey was known as Captain John Harvey and he lived in the
Morris Mansion near Cannelton. The Harveys were included in my original
list of Dunn burials and they were also on Helen Stinson's 1981 survey
of Dunn Cemetery. Morris Harvey was also once sheriff of Fayette County,
WV and he was instrumental in bringing the C & O railroad into the
Kanawha Valley. He gave a large amount of money to the Barboursville
Seminary and on May 28, 1901 the trustees changed the name of the
institution to Morris Harvey College. Mrs. Celey Morris Harvey, the mother of Morris Harvey, was a direct descendant of William Morris, a pioneer who is generally recognized as having been the first settler in the Kanawha Valley. There is a William Morris Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution website on the internet and it contains the story of how William Morris' two daughters were murdered by Simon Girty and one of his Indian allies. |
