Dates or names in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual. Excerpt from "Mason County, W.Va. Cemetery Inscriptions", Vol. III: "This
church and the very old but well kept cemetery were named for the Samuel Smith
Family who settled here at an early date and whose descendants are numerous in
this area. WVCPA last visited this cemetery in February 2007 to gather photo retakes, and were surprised to see that someone had cleaned the majority of the oldest stones - and by the appearances of many of them, the cleaning solution was too caustic for the fragile surfaces. We fear that many of them are irreparably prematurely aged because of this, and the inscriptions, let alone the stones, may not survive as many years as they otherwise might have. While the efforts were surely well-meant, and the damage already done, the result was that many previously illegible inscriptions are now quite legible. Hence, several of our initial reading entries (and those that were recorded in the Mason County, W.Va. Cemetery Inscriptions books referenced on this page) have been updated. Check your records to see that your data matches. To date, these changes apply only to those entries above that are marked with a red camera icon. This "cleaning incident" serves as yet another reminder to all of us to be sure that such restoration efforts are left to the certified professionals, and to not trust the word of salespeople, self-proclaimed specialists, or labels on bottles or cans of cleaning agents. Tombstones are valuable historical artifacts, and need to be cared for tenderly and with great care. |
