County: Putnam
USGS Quad: Kenna
Coordinates: 38.6450ºN  81.7399ºW
Maintained by: Unknown
Land owner: Casto
Date added to WVCPA register: April 2005
Condition of cemetery**: Poor (April 2005)
Accessibility: Located on the Casto farm up Reed Hollow off the Left Fork of Clendenin Creek in Putnam County. Check with the Casto's (or with the Bowling's down the road if Casto's aren't home) before entering the farm, as they do have cattle that graze in the fields you need to cross to get to the cemetery.  See the topo map for specific location. When WVCPA was there in April 2005, the first part of the road was pretty muddy, though passable with a 4x4.  We opted to park on the main road and walk in - it's a modest, fairly gentle walk up the creek onto the old Reed farm - the cemetery being on the hill to the right overlooking the old farmhouse.

** Condition of cemetery as observed on the given date - may not be representative of care at other times of the year
Scale: Excellent - Good - Fair - Poor - Abandoned

Comments:

This is a tiny family cemetery on the old James Reed farm up Reed Hollow on the Left Fork of Clendenin Creek, a tributary of Eighteen Mile Creek, in Putnam County.  We last visited this farm on a warm spring evening in April 2005, and took the opportunity to snap a few additional photos of the beautiful pastoral setting that this little cemetery enjoys.  "It was sad to see that it has been let go so...", said a WVCPA volunteer that was with us at the time - according to her, the descendants in years past had kept it up quite nicely, but most had aged beyond the ability to continue to care for the old family burial place. From what we could tell, someone, presumably the current land owners, had maintained the fence surrounding the cemetery, but little had been done to keep the weeds and brush from growing out of control within the fenced area.Reed Hollow, Putnam Co., WV

After a few phone calls to known relatives of the Reed family, the volunteer happily reported to us that arrangements were being made to clean up this cemetery later in the spring.  We haven't heard back on this as to whether that was done or not, but we do hope so.
