Use
of the readings of this cemetery graciously granted by Bill Wintz of the Upper
Vandalia Historical Society. The names and dates of the tombstone
inscriptions are taken from work done by Paul & Ruth Ellis on September
17, 1986. The contributor of the photos for this page is Terry
McCallister, a descendant of the families buried in Maddox Cemetery. It
is through his dedicated efforts that this cemetery was cleared of the
overgrown brambles and briars in August of 2003, and he and his family
continue to maintain this cemetery with loving care and devotion. We of
the WVCPA extend our encouragement and thanks to Terry for doing such a
wonderful job in preserving this little piece of the history of West Virginia!
And
notes from Terry:
"Bertie was married to two of the men there, well they were brothers.
Fred lived with Bertie and Frank to help on the farm. When Frank died he knew
Bertie couldn't take care of the farm alone and he couldn't stay there in the
same house and not be married. So he told Bertie they would get married and
she said ok. Bertie did not have any children by either man, but they lived
happy until Bertie's death."
"In the picture's I am sending, you can see one part of the fence is
falling down and three of the markers are knocked over. Well this past Fall I
got the markers reset and my Uncle Fred and myself fixed the fence. The
Cemetery is in the middle of a pasture field and cows would get thru the fence
and rub up against the markers but not now. Once I get a new picture with the
fence fixed I will send it for posting on the page.
The
land has always been in the Maddox family. The last one was Elton Maddox but
he passed away last year. The land then went to his daughter Brenda West.
There is a gate in the fence so you can either walk 50 yards to the cemetery
or drive to it because it's on top of a ridge and is flat. I called her the
day Uncle Fred and Me worked on the fence. She said just to be sure to close
the gate behind us so her cattle would not get out. There is enough room to
park outside the fence if you just want to walk in, but just watch where you
step! The cemetery is now full and there will not be anymore people
buried there."
