There
are a number of unmarked graves in this cemetery, also known by some as
"Phillips Cemetery".
This
cemetery is in the process of being "rescued" and restored.
Contact WVCPA if you would like to help in this effort, and we will get you in
contact with the coordinator of this rescue project, Terry McCallister.
Note
from Terry (dated Jan. 27, 2004):
"My Uncle Fred was retired but had been the filling in as Pastor for the
Judson Baptist Church until they found someone. He has a uncle buried there
but there is no road to it. Well he started working with the people that own
land beside the church to get a right of way to make a road to the cemetery.
Well that all has been done but it still has to be surveyed and then find
someone with a dozer to do the work. Once we get a road to it we plan on
getting a team together and clean it up and keep it that way. I walked up to
it just this past Sunday to check out a name and it's a good little walk up a
hill and thru the woods."
Use
of the readings of this cemetery graciously granted by Bill Wintz of the Upper
Vandalia Historical Society. The names and dates of the tombstone
inscriptions are taken from work done by Paul & Ruth Ellis on October 19,
1986, with updates and additional comments from Dodd/Mitchell Cemetery historian,
Terry McCallister. Terry is the contributor of the photos for this page.
