Comments:

Dates in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual.

(The following information provided by contributor David Boyd):

The old road originally passed the cemetery and the old church.  The Nickell’s place was north of the cemetery.  This was later owned by Towsends and then Mohlers.  All of the Dicksons are buried in the southwest corner of the cemetery.  There are two markers for Arch. Campbell, both with the same inscription.  William Patton’s grandmother was Virginia Nickell.

The listing in the Monroe Watchman, Union WV. 18 Jan. 1979 was originally compiled by Dr. Margaret Ballard and Mr. William Dickson, with help from the Mitchell sisters.  Jay and Marty Banks, with help from Bill Patton, rechecked each marker in 1981.

Note:  Bill Patton relates that Vernon, also known as V.C. Young, buried his wife here.  He dreamed that she was in water and he had the grave opened and it was filled with water.  She was Roberta HODGE, his first wife.  He married two more times.

Note:  The Reverend William Adair was the first settled minister for Old Lebanon A.R.P. church, 1806-1812.  He resigned from the pulpit in 1812 but remained on as a member of the congregation.

This list was transcribed May 29, 2009, from the pages of “The Cemeteries of Monroe County, WV.” compiled & Edited by Haskell & Katheryn Shumate & James and Martha Banks.  This copy is held at the West Virginia Cultural Center, Charleston, West Virginia.
