Dates in Red
are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on
death date or are as a result of research on the individual.
According to a note in "Mason County,
W.Va. Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol. 5, pg. 175, there were only two tombstones
still standing (per the early/mid-1970's). Creed and Lucy Wray, listed above,
were the parents of 4 known children, one of whom was Creed F. Wray
(1826-1905) that is buried at Moore's Chapel. There were, at the last reading
by Jean Templeton of Apple Grove, several visible stone markers without
inscriptions. The last reported burial here was for a Mrs. Curtis in about 1940.
WVCPA was contacted by a Wray descendant,
Sherry Wray from Ohio, who had visited the cemetery in 1978. According to her,
this cemetery is located behind the Creed Wray family's log cabin (long gone).
At that time, they took photos, and at a visit to the cemetery in 2005 she
found that the tombstones standing earlier had, sadly, been knocked down and
destroyed by grazing cows. The photos we have included on this page are from
her 1978 visit, and are the last known photographic record of the tombstones
of Creed and Lucy Wray. Sherry writes:
"It was quite a walk (in 1978) to get
to the cemetery and homestead. Randal McCarty owned the land at that time. His
wife, Louise Wray from William T. (Bub) Wray line. His sons own it in 2001. In
1999 the cows had nearly destroyed the cemetery. It takes a guide to find it,
very hidden. "
Our thanks to Sherry for sharing this treasured
photo with us, and allowing us to post it on this page for posterity!
