Wolfe Valley Cemetery on a misty July day

Click on image above to enlarge

County: Mason
USGS Quad: Robertsburg
Coordinates: 38.7162ºN  -81.8789ºW
Maintained by: Wolfe Valley Cemetery organization
Land owner: privately owned
Date added to WVCPA register: October 2002
Condition of cemetery**: Excellent (September 2016)
Accessibility: From Pt. Pleasant take Rt. 2 East to Rt. 62 South, proceeding through the towns of Leon and Arbuckle to Tribble Rd. which will be on the left side of Rt. 62, a convenience store and gas station will be at the corner of Tribble and Rt. 62, turn left and go out five miles, more or less on Tribble Rd. You will pass the new Wolfe Valley Church on the left, cross the bridge over Thirteenmile Creek, and take the next left (Cabin Ridge Road). The cemetery is a short distance up the hill on your right. It is located near the site of the old Cloverdale school. Parking is limited to alongside the gravel road, a road that sees a fair amount of traffic, so use caution. On the upper end of the cemetery there is a "Y" in the road - both forks of the road have regular traffic, so be careful not to block either one. However, it is at this end of the cemetery where you have the better chance of finding a spot to park as much off the road as possible.

** Condition of cemetery as observed on the given date -
may not be representative of care at other times of the year
Scale: Excellent - Good - Fair - Poor - Abandoned

[Not 100% certain this is Philip Pickens' stone, it is so deteriorated (and was mostly buried before we photographed it) it is nearly impossible to make out what little remains of the inscription. What could be read was most of "P.H. Pickens". The stone is located right alongside Mary A. Pickens, and just behind his parents Spencer and Margaret Pickens' tombstone. No other child is known in Spencer and Margaret's family with those initials. There IS a marker for Philip in Stephens Cemetery alongside his wife Eliza Adeline that is more legible. If this is an additional memorial marker for Philip, he died on May 10, 1890 at the age of 32 yrs, 4 mos., 19 ds. - making his birth date Dec. 21, 1857]

Our thanks to the many family researchers who have helped us research this cemetery - Okey King, Holly King, and John Ballard in particular - our sincere thanks to them for their assistance]

This cemetery is known by some families as "Cloverdale" or "Number 3 Cemetery", due to its proximity to the Cloverdale schoolhouse (presently used as a house, though reports are that it will soon, sadly, be demolished for lack of proper upkeep over the years).

The nearby Wolfe Valley Baptist Church was the fifth church formed in Union District in the year 1852 by the Rev. William Getchell and Rev. Lewis Greenlee.  The membership at that time was composed of the following persons: Lewis Wolfe, Christenia Wolfe, F.M. Knapp, Deborah Knapp, Jacob Zerley, John Williams, John Harpold, Elizabeth Harpold, Abigail Deweese and Joshua Deweese, a number of whom are buried in this cemetery with their descendants. While the cemetery itself is not owned or maintained by Wolfe Valley Baptist Church, it is very dear to the hearts of the members of this congregation due to the fact that in it rest the remains of family members and ancestors of nearly all of them, including the founders of the West Virginia Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc., Joel and Donna Duprey.
