County: Mason
USGS Quad: New Haven
Coordinates: 38.9989ºN  -81.9880ºW
Maintained by: Not maintained
Land owner: Unknown
Date added to WVCPA register: April 2004
Condition of cemetery**: Poor (April 2004)
Accessibility: This cemetery is located on a wooded hillside at the site of the old Welsh Baptist Church on Hartford Hill in the south end of Hartford. While the steep gravel road is not heavily traveled, we would recommend that you park towards the lower end of the hill near the house where the road is a bit wider and you do not have to park as far off the road into the soft shoulder.  The cemetery can be found in the woods off to the right a short distance up the hill. If you look closely, you will see some of the gravestones in a small clearing about 20 feet from the edge of the road (primarily those of the Fields family).  The rest of the graves are scattered through the woods down the hill and farther back along the hillside away from the road, back into the large trees. There is an old access road (no longer used), it appears, along the lower boundary of the cemetery, and you can still see remnants of an old iron fence along it in places.
The hillside is heavily covered with low undergrowth, grasses and such, and can be quite slippery in and for days after rainy weather.  There are also many old fallen logs just under the carpet of vegetation that can be easily stumbled over, and still some large enough as to have to be scrambled over to get to some of the gravesites. If you are at all unsure on your feet, we would not recommend exploring this cemetery without a steady, strong arm to hold onto or at the minimum a good walking stick.

Comments:

Dates in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual.

This roster is a compilation of multiple readings of this cemetery over the years, and through photographic evidence collected in or after April 2004 by WVCPA or its volunteers.  While duplication of entries was attempted to be corrected, there may be two or more entries for an individual, particularly if there were conflicting dates/information for them between the various readings.  Where possible, these conflicts in interpretation of dates, name spellings, etc. have been pointed out.  If you have proven, factual evidence of information that should be corrected here, or have additional photos of this cemetery, the Welsh Baptist Church, or any of the tombstones here, please contact WVCPA so we can help you share those photos via this web site. Also, if there are any names that we have omitted on this page that should be included, please let us know so we can add them to this roster.

While still listed by WVCPA as in a "Poor" condition, that is a significant improvement from the abandoned state it was in prior to April 2004.  Until this cemetery can be brought into a regular state of maintenance, which in the case of this particular cemetery is a very daunting task to most, it will remain in a precarious position near the state of neglect and abandonment.

Joel and the monster tree at Welsh Cemetery, April 2004

Click on the image to enlarge

In April 2004, staff members of the Mason Co. Development Authority and Chamber of Commerce, including Celesty Fielder and Hilda Austin, in cooperation with an AmeriCorps team of volunteers, cleared much of this cemetery that had become very overgrown with trees and underbrush.  [Click here to see photos from this project]. We were honored to be invited to participate in the clean-up efforts of this cemetery, and help with photo documentation and sharing of our knowledge/ expertise in cemetery rescue and recording with the great AmeriCorps team members and the other volunteers.  We were able to spend the morning working with the project, then again visit the cemetery in June 2004 to see how the clearing efforts had held up through the Spring growing season and heavy rain that those months had seen. While nature had again taken a strong foothold in trying to overgrow the hillside again in those few short months, our hopes are that the local Hartford community will be able to maintain this cemetery over the coming years and keep it from being neglected and lost under the trees and brush.

The photo at left is Joel hamming it up for the camera, but it also shows the size of some of the trees in this very old wooded area.  This is definitely the largest tree (in girth) we've ever seen in WV!
