Dates in Red have been calculated based on death date and age at death.

This cemetery holds a special place in the heart of the WVCPA founders, Joel & Donna Duprey, as it is the resting place of many of Joel's ancestral cousins and is located on land that was in his 4G-grandfather Joseph Harrison's twin brother Reuben Harrison's family for nearly 200 years until the year 2000.  The gracious couple that purchased the land care for the cemetery grounds and the access road to the cemetery - their house lies just across the road from the base of the hill where the cemetery is located. When visiting the cemetery, you should check in with them.

Historic Rock Spring Church, located in hollow below the cemetery, is visible in the distance on the second of the two photos at the top of this page. We invite you to visit our page for Rock Spring Church.

The name "Rock Spring" is technically plural, as there are multiple springs in the area.  However, it is generally referred to as "Rock Spring".

Most of the readings of these stones are from the archives of family researchers Elouise and Reta Harrison, and the photographs are from the WVCPA archives.

In early September 2004, a comparison was made with WVCPA readings of the cemetery and those of the Jackson County Historical Society published in "Jackson County Cemetery Transcriptions" in 1971.  The considerable amount of additional information from that source has been included on this page and referenced accordingly. There were some entries made in their reading that made it possible for us to identify stones that were nearly totally illegible in 2003, and give names to account for the many metal funeral home markers that could no longer identify the grave they marked.  Particularly of note are the many "new" additions under the Miller family surname, and additional ages at death for many of those we were able to identify in October 2003.  Simply another reminder that while these epitaphs are "carved in stone", they are by no means permanent markers.  What was visible at one time, 35 years later is beyond recognition.

Work completed under auspices of WVCPA:
  • April 2003: re-hoisted the American Flag, which had become tangled in its cords.  Placed a headstone back on its base. Discovered that an old Harrison family headstone had been removed from the cemetery, its whereabouts are unknown.
  • June 5, 2005: WVCPA volunteers were at this cemetery today doing follow-up research, and found to their horror that someone had "cleaned" all of the old tombstones with an acid wash, making them pure white and certainly more readable, but they had also neglected to rinse the stones as thoroughly as they should have been to stop the etching process. Unfortunately such an acid wash left to work into the stone will permanently damage these tombstones.  The volunteers found that even touching the stones with their hands still caused burning on their skin, that the stones were still wet to the touch with the acid cleaner.  Even with the forecasted rain that should be coming in the days to follow, that will not be sufficient to remove the acid from the stones.  If you are the person that did this to the stones, PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS TO ANY MORE STONES, in this cemetery or in any other without the proper training and following of correct procedures.  YOU HAVE IRREPARABLY DAMAGED THESE STONES
  • October 16, 2005 update:  WVCPA staff visited the cemetery and photo-documented the stones that had been acid-washed in June 2005, and noted that many, many years of the surface of the impacted stones has been chemically worn away, and has continued to wear (according to an eyewitness to the June discovery of the 'treatment' of the stones) even more, despite the few rain showers that have been in the area over the summer. While the stones are now much more legible, and appear almost as new in a number of cases, the fact remains that the job was obviously not done professionally and has caused much unnecessary deterioration of the stone faces.  In addition, WVCPA staff found that there were tombstones missing and not replaced that had been present just 2 years ago when the first photo series was done of this cemetery by WVCPA.  Investigations are underway to identify all of the stones that are no longer in the cemetery, from our photographic evidence, and to pass that information along to the proper authorities when sufficient evidence is gathered.  If you have any information regarding the missing stones, please contact Jackson County law enforcement authorities with the details, as willful removal of such grave markers without the permission of the descendants/immediate family of the deceased is a criminal offence in the State of West Virginia and punishable by law.
