County: Jackson
USGS Quad: Ripley
Coordinates: 38.8213ºN  81.7085ºW
Maintained by: Unknown
Land owner: Unknown
Date added to WVCPA register: August 2008
Condition of cemetery**: Excellent (May 2007)
Accessibility: This cemetery is located in the heart of Ripley in a residential area a couple of blocks northeast of the county courthouse on 7th Street. From the intersection of Rt. 33 and CR 21 in downtown Ripley, go north on CR21 to the next light.  The Library will be on your left across the intersection and to your right will be the Vail Funeral Home. Turn right and go to the end of the street and turn left on 7th Street.  Go about 150 yards and you will notice the cemetery is on your left in a gated chain link fence area.
There is extremely limited parking along the street at the southwest gate (basically in front of the gate), but more spaces available on the street along the east fence.  The gates are generally locked, but you may borrow the key from the public library clerk during their open hours (as per our latest experience - some sources have also found the key to be at the bank next door - either would likely know who you'd need to contact). The cemetery itself is fairly well-maintained and relatively accessible, though the ground can be quite uneven in places. Use caution when walking through the grounds if you are at all unsure on your feet.
** Condition of cemetery as observed on the given date -
may not be representative of care at other times of the year
Scale: Excellent - Good - Fair - Poor - Abandoned

Comments:

Early Settler's Cemetery, Jackson Co., WV - as seen in January 2003 from the east fenceDates in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual.

According to WVCPA volunteer Keith Weekley, this cemetery contains many of the early settlers of Ripley (at least 27 of them), but many here were simply their relatives of more recent local residents that were not among the earliest settlers.  This listing is, at best, about 80% complete, as many of the stones are no longer legible from damage by people or
Early Settler's Cemetery, Jackson Co., WV - as seen in January 2003 from the east fencenature, and some have just been missed by accident when reading the cemetery. If you know of a name (verified) that should be included here, please contact WVCPA.

WVCPA is thankful to Keith for his great help in getting an up to date reading, as well as many of the photographs of this cemetery.
