Mary M. Pratt -

"I wanted to update a grave listing that was catalogued by Ruth & Paul Ellis October 08, 1986. According to the listing for Smith Cemetery on Sycamore Road in Hurricane, there were two graves that had obtainable information. One was Evaline Neil & the other was Mary Pratt. I have found Mrs. Neil's funeral home plaque and photo-catalogued it. However, I have never been able to locate the marker for Mary Pratt.

According to the transcription, Mrs. Pratt died in 1982. This would have been 4 short years before the survey by Mr. & Mrs. Ellis. I have combed through obituaries with no success and even asked Mrs. Billups, the current landowner of the cemetery and she could not recall anyone being buried there as recently as 1982. I could find no supporting evidence that Mrs. Pratt passed away and was buried in 1982. However, I researched Joseph A. Pratt , who was listed as her husband, and found his family, including his wife Melvina, in the 1880 Federal Census in Curry District, Putnam County page 35, line 39, house number 306, family number 312. I believe that Melvina is Mary M. Pratt. Her age is perfect if she would have died in 1882, just 2 years after this census. My conclusion is that her full name was Mary Melvina Pratt and that she actually died November 11, 1882 and that the listing by the Upper Vandalia Society was in fact a typographical error."
